Reduction Contemporary Rhinoplasty or cosmetic reshaping of the nose has undergone several changes over the last two decades.
First, most rhinoplasty is performed upon Caucasian patients who have large noses that they want to look smaller. This is called a reduction rhinoplasty and is accomplished by cutting away excessive cartilage and bone and letting the natural skin shrink-wrap down to the smaller framework. In the past too much cartilage was removed which commonly resulted in too small appearing noses that were upturned, pinched, piggy and twisted. To prevent this result Dr. Romo has developed a rhinoplasty technique called reduction structured rhinoplasty that results in natural looking nose jobs that maintain excellent breathing capacity. The key to this technique is that once a standard reduction rhinoplasty is performed, specific pieces of structural septal cartilage or implants are sutured into position in the nose to prevent over shrinking of the nasal skin and supporting the final shape resulting in a predictable natural rhinoplasty.
Augmentation
Additionally Dr. Romo is an expert in rhinoplasty in people of color. Dr. Romo calls this technique "aesthetic reconstruction of the platyrrhine or flattened nose". His augmentation technique utilizes natural tissue and safe porous implants to produce a nose that matches the face and the race of the individual.
This idea first conceived and published by Dr. Romo in 1992 has its basis that flattened or platyrrhine nose rhinoplasty requires specific augmentation of the nose. The skin of the nose has no shape; it is the underlying cartilage and bony architecture that give shape to the nose. Therefore these noses require specific placement of grafts and implant material to produce a natural looking nose that matches the face and nose of the individual. |
